TROPIA ART X TAJMI
Oaxaca - The sun was shining strong, the air smelled of roasted corn. The ceremony of the Gods was close, there at noon…a crowing of the rooster brought her back to reality, she was meant to find her grandmother to braid her long dark hair…
The name Oaxaca derives from the Náhuatl word, Huayacac, which roughly translated means “the place of the seed”, in reference to a tree commonly found in the region. Oaxaca’s two largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, theirs roots stretching deep into the early Mesoamerican era. The region is located in Southwestern México and has a significant coastline on the Pacific Ocean. It’s rugged and isolating terrain have benefited these cultures more than most, aiding in their cultural longevity. Oaxaca is also one of the most biodiverse states in México filled with an abundance of flora and fauna.
