Origin: A small village close to Oualata, in Southeast Mauritania.

These natural mats were originally used as flooring and walls within the Nomadic Tuareg tribe. They are extremely lightweight, yet durable, making them easy to transport, as well as withstand the harsh climate of the Sahara desert.

At their base, Tuareg Mats are made up of reed sourced from the Senegal River. The decorative motifs typically derive from either goat or camel leather. 

Each mat is one-of-a-kind and tells a unique story created by the artisan. The design motifs are quite similar to the traditional Moroccan Amazigh symbols woven into their rugs, representing strength, protection and prosperity.
